This book is more a synopsis of oral pathology and medicine than
a comprehensive textbook. It is packed with tables, figures, and
flow charts to give a simplified view of the subject. The
purpose is to provide a survey of the dental surgery final
examination. This edition pays special attention to managing
patients who are medically compromised or handicapped in some
capacity. The authors hope that this will educate dentists to
avoid or protect themselves against lawsuits. Since lawsuits are
a constant risk for dentists, this book is an invaluable
resource. Although it is not highly detailed, it nonetheless
educates non-pathologists effectively with a general overview.
This book is intended for dental practitioners with clinical
experience. It is not intended for specialists in the oral
pathology field, rather it is for general dentists or other
kinds of specialists who do not have a lot of exposure to this
field. Judging from the contents of the book the authors seem to
be credible authorities. This book covers basic hard tissue
pathology as well as soft tissue diseases and disorders.
Additionally, the last section is devoted to medically
compromised patients and other types of uncommon, or special
cases. The best part of the book is the photos and diagrams of
soft tissue pathologies, which accompany the text. Both the
macroscopic and microscopic photos are extremely hard to obtain
in regular clinical practice. Therefore, the photos are
invaluable in providing a detailed view of common soft-tissue
disorders. In addition to the photos, the simplified flow
charts, diagrams, and tables make the contents easy to
understand in a concise manner. This type of book, which
provides a general overview of oral pathology and detailed
photos, is not easy to find. Since it is only intended to be a
survey of oral pathology for non-specialists, there are really
no significant shortcomings. In comparison to other textbooks of
oral pathology, this book is less detailed and less
comprehensive. However, it provides general dentists with a
simple and easy-to-use guide to identifying problems which lie
outside of their expertise, making it a very valuable resource.
General dentists will be able to make referrals to other
specialists when they identify disorders. Therefore, this book
serves as a necessary reference book to their practices.
